ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:
+
-
Graduate Courses at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB):
+
-
+
-
1. Strategic Planning and Evaluation for Health Information System (HI 630) (together
+
-
with Mrs. Valeria M. Wilson, UAB Hospital Information Services): Today’s environment
+
-
necessitates the development and execution of strategic plans for the management of infor-
+
-
mation technologies.  As the health care industry re-engineers for an increasingly changing
+
-
market, the recognition of information and its management as a critical resource will acceler-
+
-
ate.  For survival, enterprises must be able to integrate information technology to support
+
-
critical business objectives.  Strategies to ensure and measure their effectiveness and benefits
+
-
will become a likely requirement in an environment of competing health care markets.
+
-
+
-
2. Health Information System Selection and Contract Negotiations (HI 625): The purpose
+
-
of the course is to provide both the theory and, through simulated experiences, the practice in
+
-
developing RFPs, evaluating vendor proposals, negotiating vendor software contracts, and
+
-
preparing for the implementation of an information system. Students will be given the oppor-
+
-
tunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for successfully acquiring and
+
-
implementing a commercial information system and establishing a successful relationship
+
-
with the vendor. In addition, we will examine how to respond to the numerous opportunities
+
-
that the federal government provides to obtain grants and contracts (SBIR programs of NIH,
+
-
DoD, NASA, DoE, etc. and the NIST Advanced Technology Program).
+
-
+
-
3. Managing Web-based Systems for Health Care (HI 606): This is a hands-on computer
+
-
systems’ course designed to provide fundamental knowledge and concepts of modern infor-
+
-
mation systems and to provide the skills to install, configure, and manage these information
+
-
systems and components. The primary focus is on Web-based systems that form the basis of
+
-
the next generation of information systems.
+
-
+
-
4. Introduction to Health Information Systems for Managers (HA 640): The purpose of this
+
-
course is to provide administrators and managers an introduction and overview of informa-
+
-
tion systems used in the health care industry. Effective use of clinical data and their quantita-
+
-
tive analysis requires an understanding of how the data is captured during the process of pro-
+
-
viding patient care. The course provides students with sufficient background to communicate
+
-
effectively with technical personnel and provide general management oversight of informa-
+
-
tion systems within health care organizations.
+
-
+
-
5. Administrative Leadership in Health Care (Health Informatics Module HA 640-OF)
+
-
(team teaching with other HI faculty members): This module is a required component of the
+
-
Executive M.S.H.A. degree program for physicians and health care professionals. It provides
+
-
one week of intensive training in health informatics in Birmingham, AL and ten (10) weeks
+
-
of remote follow-on training at their location of employment using e-mail and video-
+
-
conferencing technologies. The contents of the course covers topics of health information
+

systems and their information infrastructure, the use of computers in outcomes research, and

in quality improvement processes.

Graduate Courses in Medical Informatics at the University of Utah:
+
-
1. Advanced Networking and Communications Technologies for Health Information Sys-
+
-
tems, (MDINF 6230) this graduate course addresses current networking for local and wide area
+
-
networks. The topics include traditional networking technologies (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet,
+
-
FDDI, SMDS, Frame Relay) and emerging technologies such as ATM (Asynchronous Transfer
+
-
Mode), ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Loop), Gigabit Ethernet, ISDN (Integrated
+
-
Services Digital Network), and wireless voice/data networks. Special emphasis is placed on
+
-
technologies used by the world-wide-web.
+
-
+
-
2. Core Course in Medical Informatics: Systems Development Section (MDINF 6000) this
+
-
section of three lectures provides an overview of and introduction to the architecture of health
+
-
information systems and the development processes for health information systems. This in-
+
-
cludes a discussion of the systems development life cycle and modern software engineering
+
-
practices. The emphasis is on client/server and the new web-based systems. The goal is make
+
-
students aware of the evolving object oriented software design tools to create event driven soft-
+
-
ware interfaces, and reusable software components based on ActiveX and Java components.
+
-
+
-
3. Research Design in Medical Informatics (MDINF 6110), together with Aruna Bansal, Ph.D.)
+
-
this course introduces Medical Informatics students in basic techniques for research and ex-
+
-
perimental design, evaluations techniques of user interfaces and clinical information systems.
+
-
Students must select a project, evaluate the appropriate literature, prepare research proposals,
+
-
practice technical writing and presentation skills, familiarize themselves with reviewing manu-
+
-
scripts and research proposals (e.g., the NIH grants review process) by evaluating and critiquing
+
-
real manuscripts and research proposals. The student must defend the project in a seminar.
+
-
+
-
4. Web-Based Programming (MDINF 695-1, together with Dean Sorenson, Ph.D., Bruce Bray,
+
-
M.D., and Jonathan Olson, BSCS), this experimental course provides students with a knowl-
+
-
edge of current Internet technologies. The students will become familiar with applications de-
+
-
velopment methods and skills necessary to create a functional web-based application.
+
-
+
-
5. AMIA Tutorials (1994, 1995, 1996, 1997): Emerging Communications Technologies for
+
-
Health Information Systems, a 3-hour overview of current enterprise-wide networking tech-
+
-
nologies, topologies, and management issues. Foundations of frame and cell switching tech-
+
-
nologies (e.g., Frame Relay, SMDS, ATM); strategies for migrating from traditional networks
+
-
(Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigagbit Ethernet) to ATM-based backbone. Wide-area communica-
+
-
tions technologies (ISDN, Frame Relay, ATM, SONET), and advanced local loop technologies
+
-
(ADSL, VDSL).
